001 Why I am joining the League of SuperParents

I would never in my wildest dreams call myself a superparent.

I think I am a superparent wannabe.

Perhaps being in the League will cause some super parenting powers to rub off on me :D

Still, I reckon i can still be of some use here.

'Cos it seems, from third-party feedback, that I must have done some things right:

"Yea i like the way you bring K up. I can see that he is different from others.
Very bright looking, very alive looking, very energetic and very alert and on his toes.
Not dulled by studies and pressure . . . C enjoys playing with K very much. She says he is so funny! haha"

And this frriend also suspects her husband may want to adopt K! :P

Aah, parenting, the highly challenging and rewarding business of holistic personhood development.

I reckon my kid teaches me more about life than i do him ;)

I think the best i can do for my son is to love him unconditionally (easier said than done), and the best gifts i can give as a parent are to teach him life skills, especially resilience.

And I occasionally remind him that I can only teach him what I know, so he will do well to stay open to learning from everyone around him.

We worked out our kiddo's top values together: being "smart and kind, brave and hardworking."

He's joyful, fun and funny too :D. Plus caring and gentle with people of all ages, young and old.

I am also blessed to have an awesome awesome hands-on-father of a husband who co-parents our champ with relish, especially in things I am not particularly enthusiastic about, like watching "live" footy games, camping for two straight weeks in the outback, and watching every single episode of Man vs Wild (can that man please stop doing things that involve his pee and animal guts!!).

Brad Sugars said we tend to over-estimate what we can achieve in one year, and under-estimate what we can achieve in 10.

As I enter the 10-year milestone into mummyhood, i am so grateful that i have a son who has made the journey absolutely rewarding. Parenthood can be as easy or as hard as you want it to be, and at the heart of it all, is the privilege to give and receive unconditional love. What a fantastic journey :)

I guess this blog will be about stuff that I have done right or others have done right that could help other parents.

Through stories, time-saving recipes, reflections, and other stuff.

And I hope to pass along some stuff to laugh about too.

Cos superparenting doesn't have to be a struggle, and every smile counts, especially during the moments you forget why you ever wanted kids LOL

Thankfully we always recover from those moments, and i reckon SuperParents.com can help in so many ways.

Thanks Colin, for the privilege of being in the League! xo

015 K's Fav Cartooning Camp is Coming to Singapore Next Week!! (15-19 March)

Hi peeps

I was so fascinated by how well this camp was run and how much fun and learning K got out of it that I initially wanted to write an article about it. Unfortunately I did not manage to prioritise it early enough, so I am just forwarding you the brochure here with this note.

Methinks Singaporeans will love it cos the curriculum is very kiasu - everything also teach one ah! :)
There are lots of other fun activities besides drawing, and they get to move around, not just sit there the whole day. I think this camp is best for school-age kids (definitely primary school, maybe lower secondary).

I was tickled pink when K returned with fists full of dollars, i mean THOUSANDS of dollars, from Cartoon Kingdom, and later earned even more with his massage stall on Market Day (last day).

Not sure if they will have water fights in the Singapore version (should be same curriculum i think) but K sure had fun with that when he attended his first camp in Perth last holidays. He has declared this is his fav among all the different camps we send him to, and we are definitely booking him in for the next ones! :)

In Singapore, it will be held in the Red Cross HQ in Bishan and you can pick and choose days to attend, or attend every day (we did the whole lot!). I was intrigued that even after nine straight hours there, K wanted to stay for the night camp! Danny and his gang certainly know how to engage and manage kids!

Just think of the paktor (dating) possibilities if you throw syour kids there the whole day :D Oh i forgot, not so crucial in Singapore where you have maids :)

K's favs were
1) Night Camp where they got to play "Murder in the Dark" and
2) Market Day on the last day - his massage stall was so popular he had to "hire" two more kids to run it with him! LOL.

I particularly liked that the camp taught them about money in a fun way. There is a story behind it, i had the good fortune to chat with the very friendly and approachable boss Danny here in Perth (he obviously loves kids and has several of his own). He has always loved drawing, and learnt how to turn his creative interest into a thriving business by learning entrepreneurial skills from his folks at an early age.

I hope this email doesn't get to you too late, and you can still get a slice of the AWESOME Cartooning Camp experience. Wah, such a convenient venue, just drop the kids off and then escape to Bishan Junction 8 to shop, eat, watch a movie or all of the above :)

012 Living the Life You Were Born to Live: Are You Chasing the Five C’s or Pursuing the Five A’s?

I googled the Five C’s ’cos I had forgotten what the fifth one was.

Interesting: top Google results were all about Singapore.

The Five Cs = Cash, Car, Credit Card, Condominium, aaah sooo that fifth C is "Country Club".

I know most Singaporeans can rattle off the list by heart yet it hadn't occurred to me that this is a uniquely Singaporean concept.

Next, I googled the Five A’s ’cos I had forgotten what the fifth one was too (*d'oh*!).

I had seen the Five A’s once on a poster in a Buddhist centre in Singapore, and thought it was really elegantly expressed and inspiring.

Woohoo! On Google, I struck GOLD cos No. 1 on the results list was not the Five A’s but the SEVEN A’s!

Awareness
Acknowledgement
Acceptance
Appreciation
Attraction
Action
Abundance

The spiritually attuned Phil Baldey from strategicpulse.com in 100% pure New Zealand, thanks for your article!

Phil talks about the Seven A’s in a business context and gave an example of how you could work through from Awareness to Abundance when there is a personality issue of dogmatism.

I reckon the Seven A’s formula can pretty much be applied to any issue.

EUREKA! POWER FORMULA!

Why was I googling these terms in the first place?

’Cos I suddenly thought about the Five A’s and the Five C’s this morning when I was doing Exercise #2: The Job from Heaven (Or Hell!) from the book  ‘I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was: How to Discover What You Really Want and How to Get It” by Barbara Sher with Barbara Smith.

Hell, it’s hard to stop doing what everyone says you should be doing, and listen to that often ignored inner voice who desperately wants to tell you what she wants to do. Yet once you start honouring your inner wisdom, wonderful things start to happen.

So Why was I reading that particular book?

’Cos it fell into my attention zone at precisely the right time (yeah! demonstrating another wise Buddhist idea “when the student is ready, the teacher appears”) when I put out this question last week, “If we indeed UNCOVER our life purpose instead of CREATE it (thanks Croz!), how do you uncover your purpose in the first place?”

Now I have the Seven A’s, I had a little fun unpacking it for myself.

To have abundance, take action,
To take action, activate attraction,
To activate attraction, have appreciation,
To have appreciation, exercise acceptance,
To exercise acceptance, give acknowledgement,
To give acknowledgement, start with awareness.

The single thing all wildly successful people have in common is Awareness.
That’s where it all starts, baby.

To Have
Awareness
Acknowledgement
Acceptance
Appreciation
Attraction
Action
Abundance

Be
Aware
Acknowledging
Accepting
Appreciative
Attractive
Active
Abundant

Didnt’t need more words at this point to explain the Seven A’s.

Just turning them over in my mind does the trick of revealing associations and interpretations meaningful to me. Try it for yourself and see how you go :) xo

In my case, it was realising that what I truly want out of life isn’t exactly the same as what others and society say I should want to be considered successful AND starting to feel that it is OK, that I will be OK if I design my future inside out. Hell, I’ll be more than OK! :D

There is a degree of audacity in pursuing what you want out of life inside out. Plus faith and a whole lot of satisfaction, fun and adventure. Even if you start out with absolutely none of the above, you’d be pleasantly surprised what sorta muscles you could develop in these areas if you just keep going. I still pinch myself sometimes when I realise what is happening.

And you don’t just jump from living a life you don’t want to living the life you want. I am blessed that I am already living the life I want to a certain degree cos I started this journey some time ago.

And while this blog stops here, the personal evolution doesn’t .  Here’s a BIG HUG and thanks for reading. Time to get the boys and go snorkeling!

007 Recipes: Quick Steak and Royal Blue Mash with Mint Potatoes and Tossed Salad

K said, "I feel like having steak for dinner."

We had (made roughly in that order)
A - Royal Blue Mash
B - Mint Peas
C - Spanish Spiced Steak
D - Tossed Salad (nope, no scrambled eggs)

A - ROYAL BLUE MASH

1. Royal blue potatoes are so yummy and make a creamy yellow mash!

2. Rinse and cut into wedges, skins on cos i like the more rustic
effect. Also, as i was cutting i was wondering if i should grill them
but aiya today can feel a sore throat forming so decided not to.

3. Place wedges in large microwave pot preferably with steaming basket
(add a large spash of water to create steam), cover and M/W for 10
minutes.

[Meanwhile, prepare salad]

4. Remove steaming basket, carefully transfer very hot potatoes into
m/w pot, mash potatoes in pot with my beautiful chunky steel potato
masher, skins and all.

5. This time i added thick cream, butter, pepper, salt. Aiya forgot to
add parsley.

6. Keep covered warm till ready to serve dolloped onto large flat
plates (love my white Corelles).

B - MINT PEAS

1. Defrost frozen peas in water. Drain.
2. K gets double portion (he loves peas!) served in a ramekin on his plate.
3. D gets half portion (he doesn't love peas but they will look pretty
and green on the plate next to the steak and potatoes :)
4. Mine goes into my mega salad.

C - SPANISH SPICED STEAK

1. In large metal bowl, coat 1/2 inch steaks with spanish spice mix
and olive oil. Man! This spice mix i got from Limes in Myaree adds
magic to everything, soups, salads, steaks, etc etc. And the blade
steak was on sale today $6.99/kg.
2. In large flat nonstick fry pan on med-hi flame (no need to oil pan
cos you have already oiled the steaks), sear steaks to desired
doneness. For us, 1.5 minute on each side sufficed. "Medium rare
please," says K.
3. Place in loosely covered glass bowl to rest (from my new
rectangular set *glee*).
4. Keep drippings in pan for shrooms in salad from next recipe.

D - TOSSED SALAD

[During the 10 minutes while waiting for potatoes to cook, in between
cooking steak]
1. In large salad bowl, throw in mixed salad leaves, grape tomatoes
(my fav!), pumpkin seeds (another fav!).
2. K doesnt eat tomatoes but he can pick them out later ;)
3. Slice two bowls/cups of buttom shrooms. One portion gets cooked in
the steak drippings and added to the salad for the boys who may say
"eeeww" to too much raw shrooms.
4. Toss in Caesar Salad Dressing, remove salad portions for the boys
(place on their plates).
5. Then make the REAL yummy mega salad for myself.
6. Add beetroot and raw shrooms and peas. Toss toss. I have my steak
salad in a large bowl (set from Target with psychedelic flowers).

At the table, slice juicy pink slivers of steak on my new wooden IKEA
chopping board to add to my yummy mega salad.
All right, I'll do the same for the boys as well. D picks an explosive
shiraz to go perfectly with the steak.
Leftover steak goes into next day's lunch - a sandwich for K and
(guess what!) another salad for me! D likes his Chinese rice+dishes
for lunch so no tapau for him today.

Sorry, polished off the grub so fast didnt take any pics! We'll just
have to do this again some time :)

P/S "Aiya not enough carbo," says D. Supper was "haymee" instant
noodles with kangkong and prawns.
